Welcome to Lent

I'm thinking that anyone who got to celebrate New Oleans-style Mardi Gras must be doing a big Lent now. So . . . what are you giving up?

I'm trying to rein in my food-eating madness and get exercise at every opportunity. Lame, but it just may work. I'm starting out with the worst cold I've had in years, so I should be able to limit my consumption of food I can't even smell.

  1. I am giving up alcohol, as something that I enjoy, and sweets, as something that will improve my life.

Also, Leslie and I decided we are going to give up not going to church on Sundays.

  2. I think I am just going to give up beer. I gave up drinking this last two years, and realized that I sometimes used it as an excuse not to go out. So I am going to go with no beer, and train for a half-marathon.

Kent, church is boring. Be prepared.

  3. Wow! Very impressive Kent and Leslie. I am going to give up smoking cigarettes. I don't really feel like I have to give anything up though because I am not catholic.

  4. I am going to take care of the boredom aspect by going to a different church every week. This week was St Mary's Assumption, which was really ornate, and filled with statues of saints. Then, in the back, they had a shrine to the old pastor, who was beatified by JPII. They had his bones in a reliquary, and his coffin was on display. They also had a large collection of saints' relics, including St Ignatius Loyola, SJ. I sang the song to myself when I saw it.

Basically, they had all the cool polytheistic shit that I like about Catholicism.

Next week is St Stephen's or St. Patrick's.
